The town was laid out in 1851 and was named after Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It experienced some rapid growth in 1871 when the railroad came to town. Unlike so many of the small towns around Des Moines finding their origin in coal mines, Carlisle started with a Lumber and Flour Mill on the Des Moines river. When the Bank of Carlisle was founded in 1895 the settlement was home to several general stores, drugstores, hardware stores, livery stables, a bakery, a barber shop, a hotel, a doctor’s office, a harness shop, a blacksmith and other small businesses.
