More Information about Saylorville, Iowa

In the mid 1800’s, without out the internet, air travel and GPS satellites, your world was much smaller. It might be the vicinity immediately around you. The Saylorville area was not like the adjoining agricultural territory but was dominated by timber and sharper terrain. One thing though today about Saylorville, Iowa, is that this small town is really in a sweet spot. Let’s see why.

By the Compass

Let’s stand in the middle of this small town and spin around the compass. Directly to the south you have Des Moines, the capital of Iowa and a city of over 600,000 residents. To the northeast you have the rapidly growing city of Ankeny. To the west you have the cities of Johnston and Urbandale. Two more communities seeing an increase in population with the attraction of several popular industries currently in the Des Moines market. You can travel around this compass very easily and quickly with immediate access to two major highways, Interstate 35 heading north and south and Interstate 80 carrying traffic east and west.

Just a little History

What initially made Saylorville the entity that we know today was the coal mining industry. The town was first laid out in 1850 and named after its founder, John Saylor. The rough terrain enhanced the access to the mines and also grazing pastures for lifestock. The town has remained sleepy and quiet with slow and meticulous growth with around 5,000 residents calling it home today.

Namesake

In 1965 construction was started on the Saylorville dam just to the immediate northwest of the town. Initially approved through Congress in 1958 as a flood control measure Saylorville Lake has delivered over 16,000 acres, or over nine square miles for recreation. Since its completion in 1977 the lake has become the focal point for central Iowa for boating, fishing and swimming as well has many land activities in the state parks that surround the body of water. In Jester Park and Big Creek State Park you can find four different campgrounds. Acorn Valley and Cherry Glen put you into those hardwood timbers of old, Prairie Flower has you in the middle of a beautifully planted prairie and at Bob Shetler you can be at the edge of the water. Over 500 campsites total! You’ll find ample trails for hiking and biking and areas for game bird hunting and disc golf course action.

Big City Amenities

The really nice thing about Saylorville, Iowa, is not only the fact that it is quiet, safe and a bit of a throwback but it is so darn close to everything Des Moines has to offer. The market is booming with the Insurance and Tech industry growth so you can make an attempt to try the over 800 restaurants or visit the number of shopping venues, from local boutiques to big national entities. There are museums, a zoo, a casino and an amusement park for starters. Saylorville is a real diamond in the rough when it comes to the character you will find in this Midwestern locale.
