Can you fix exposed tooth roots naturally?
When patients begin to notice that their teeth appear to be longer or unexpectedly experience increased sensitivity, they may have an exposed tooth root. Fortunately, exposed roots can be prevented through good oral hygiene practices. This can also aid in preventing the issue from becoming worse. If a root is exposed, however, patients will require treatment from a dental professional.
The tooth contains two parts including the crown and root. The crown is the visible portion of the tooth which exists above the gums. The root of the tooth is quite long and embedded into the jawbone for a secure foundation. In order to give the tooth necessary stability, it is typically twice as long as the crown. The root is not visible in a healthy mouth as it is surrounded by bone and gum tissue.
The tooth’s root can unfortunately become exposed when patients experience receding gums. Gum recession is typically caused by gum disease. Gingivitis is the earliest form of gum disease and can be reversed through good oral hygiene. When it remains untreated, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis, which can cause bone loss. Advanced gum disease can result in receding gums and bone loss, resulting in an exposed root.
Symptoms
When a root becomes exposed, the gum surrounding the tooth may appear to be lower than the gums of the surrounding teeth. The teeth may also start to appear longer, as more of the crown is exposed. Unfortunately, when an exposed root is near the back of mouth, it may not be visible. Increased sensitivity can be an early sign of root exposure. The sensitivity may be especially pronounced when consuming hot, cold, acidic, and sweet things. The severity of the pain can vary based on the amount of root which is exposed.
Other signs and symptoms which are common with gum disease can include swollen, red gums which bleed during routine activities such as brushing and flossing. Patients who smoke cigarettes are at an increased risk for gum disease. It is also possible for the teeth to become loose or feel unstable, even making patients fearful that the teeth may fall out. The crown of the tooth is covered by enamel which is incredibly strong. The root, however, is not covered by enamel and therefore is more susceptible to infection and decay when it is exposed.
Good oral hygiene is the best method for stopping and preventing gum disease and receding gums. Good oral hygiene is summarized below:
- Brushing the teeth at least twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste and soft bristled toothbrush
- Floss the teeth daily
- Make regular visits to the dentist for an examination and professional cleaning
- Make good lifestyle choices with a nutritious and balanced diet. Avoid bad habits such as smoking and consuming large amounts of sugar and alcohol
- Maintain good general health
Once the tooth roots are exposed, there is no way to cover them with any remedies which can be completed at home. Patients will need to work with a dentist to treat the issue and restore their oral health. The failure to treat exposed roots can result in serious issues such as long-term damage (which may require extraction) and tooth loss.
