A Little History

Many of the cities and towns around Des Moines had their starts with coal mines and railroad stops. Adel’s beginning was associated with a flour mill. The town was incorporated back in 1847 and originally called Penoach. Two years later the name was changed to Adel. It is the oldest town in Dallas County and also the county seat with just short of 5,000 residents. The flour mill was built in 1856 and received a good supply of water power from the Raccoon River. The mill was destroyed in 1913. The town in 1855 had 25 houses and three stores. The railroad finally came to town in 1870 and offered passenger service until 1952. The big take-away from this small town is the County Courthouse. Built in 1902 as an example of French Chateau architecture the building is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The courthouse is the cornerstone to the Historical District. Adel is the only location on the Register that has both buildings and roads as historical landmarks. The streets have been renovated using the original authentic bricks.

That Perfect Combination

Adel has a vibrant business community with a solid number of restaurants and retail opportunities. It has several parks with numerous recreational activities available. They also have a community stage and pavilion that can be used by residents for weddings, concerts and any type of gathering. When the railroad terminated its service to Adel it opened the opportunity for a multi-use trail. The Raccoon River Valley Trail was opened in 1989 and offers 56 miles of paved trail winding through Dallas, Guthrie and Green Counties.

So from your small town right out of a history book you jump on Interstate 80 and run into Des Moines. You can fly out of the regional airport, dine at one of the over 800 restaurants or take the family shopping at the largest mall in the state. You can make a special day out of it by hitting the outdoor amusement park or visiting the zoo and the assorted museums. You can watch a future professional baseball player at the Iowa Cubs or attend the state fair, one of the best in the country.
