More Information about Bondurant, Iowa
How long does it take you to finish a cup of coffee? If your answer is 18 minutes then you can enjoy one cup driving from Bondurant to the largest city in Iowa, Des Moines. Let’s take a few minutes and identify some characteristics about Bondurant, Iowa that make this such a quaint little town.
Bondurant was founded in 1884 by Alexander Bondurant, the area’s first settler. The Chicago Great Western Railway built a railway station in the small town in 1883 and then the town was officially incorporated in 1897. The current population is right around 6,000 residents. The rail station served the area’s train passengers all the way up until 1962. As in so many communities coast to coast, the city purchased the vacant station and the rail right of way to create a trail system for both hiking and biking. A very nice addition to this small town.
It is safe to say that Bondurant is really more of a bedroom community. The central downtown is small and features a few retail stores, fire department, eateries and some pubs. There are number of businesses that call Highway 65 running diagonally through town home as well. The town has done a good job supporting recreational activities, whether it be around the small lake in the town, Lake Petokca, or the several sports complexes that have been built. The University of Iowa just completed a survey in Bondurant. The results showed that 97% of the residents find the town a nice place to live. They rated the services of the Library, the Fire department and the Water department all way above average. They responded that the town could do a better job with street repair, snow removal and that it lacks in economic development efforts.
The real benefit of Bondurant is the location. Yes, it really is a small town. Everything you look for in a small town you will find in Bondurant. Quiet streets, affordable housing, a good educational system for a growing family and neighborhoods were you actually know your neighbors and the kids play in the streets. But as mentioned earlier, you are very close to all the amenities of a large city in Des Moines. What else is unique about Bondurant is its proximity to a very contemporary community of fast growing Ankeny and also Ames, Iowa, home to Iowa State University. Ames is only 30 to 40 minutes away. So if you are not afraid to jump in the car you have multiple options an eyelash away. Interestates 80 and 35 are only a few turns away for cross country travel, as well as the regional airport in Des Moines with very good air traffic service. The short drive from those more populous metro areas allows you to disengage from the rapid pace and slow down to enjoy your home and family. The best thing about Bondurant, Iowa, is that this small town gives you the best of both worlds.
