More Information about Granger, Iowa
Granger is yet another small town in the Midwest that had its origin associated with the growth of the railroad. But there are a few facts about Granger, Iowa that may set it apart when it comes to developing a heritage and some character.
The town was incorporated in 1885 and named after C.T. Granger, who was a railroad man. Inside of a year the railroad built a depot and a side track. Numerous stores popped up and a one room school house was built. By 1905 the school was replaced with a four room brick building and functioned without electricity until 1916. Here comes the first of the two unusual facts that Granger can claim. In 1906 a travelling circus bought ground south of Granger to call home for the winter months. By 1926 there were 20 buildings supporting the circus animals. The circus called it quits with the Great Depression of 1930. The rumor is there is an elephant buried on this ground! The second head scratching fact about Granger is that this small town has two water towers. Look closely though, one say HOT and the other says COLD!
This charming small town of about 1,500 residents is only 30 minutes northwest from Des Moines, the capital of Iowa. Des Moines has experienced substantial growth in the last 15 years thanks to the insurance industry and the high tech industry. Granger is right on the edge of some substantial residential increases in neighboring cities like Ankeny, Urbandale and Waukee. None the less, it is seeing some slow methodical growth for those that don’t mind a brief commute before and after work.
The municipal entity does an outstanding job for a community of this size. Fire, Rescue and Police departments lead the way with dedicated Public Works employees, a modern library and an active parks and recreation department keeping pace. The town is proud of the fact that you cannot get through town without someone waving at you! They celebrate small town, friendly values. The contributions by residents to the many programs offered contributes to this culture.
Only a half a cup of coffee away is Saylorville Lake, a huge nine square mile body of water offering all water activities. Also surrounding the lake are two state parks with four different campgrounds with over 500 sites. There is tons of hiking and biking available as well. What’s great about Granger, Iowa, is that Des Moines offers the balance of any amenities you might be seeking. Over 700 restaurants to explore, or unique boutique shops for retail therapy or the largest mall in the state. The family will beg to visit the amusement park, or the state fair, the zoo, maybe one of the museums. There is just so much to do in a diverse city of over 600,000 residents. Then, finish your day of adventure, point the car north, and head back to your quiet little town of Granger. Keep an eye out for that stranger on the corner waving at you!
