Grimes now has over 12,000 residents. The average household income in Grimes is about $78,000. The median home and condo value is about $180,000 and the average rent rate is $1,050. The town has experienced rapid growth as of late with more young people moving into the area. The median age is only 32.9, which is young for a non-college town. Young families claim again and again they like the small town feel and the security that goes along with that. There is something to be said about letting your children play outside and down the block without worrying.
One of the older small towns surrounding Des Moines, Grimes was founded in 1881 and incorporated back in 1894. Like so many other Midwest towns the growth was driven by the arrival of the railroad. The original name for the town was submitted as Stewart but the post office rejected it because of the town Stuart was nearby. So the town was named after the third governor of Iowa, James Grimes.
