The Beginning
It actually started in 1905 as a stop between Des Moines and Perry, Ia. Due to some state laws regarding neighboring communities it did not become incorporated until 1969. The last official census in 2010 had Johnston with 17, 278 inhabitants. The town more than doubled in ten years.

The Economy
A lot of that growth came in support of several major employers. Pioneer Hi-Bred Seeds, Iowa Public Television and the Gardeners of America call Johnston home for their headquarters. The Camp Dodge military reserve base is located in Johnston and serves as the headquarters for the Iowa National Guard. Twice in its existence Camp Dodge has been turned over to national authorities. First, during World War I, when it was a regional training center, and then again in World War II when it served as an induction center. You will also find a private residence in Johnston designed by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Finally of note is the Des Moines branch of the National Weather Service. Just two years ago in Money magazine Johnston was chosen as the 16th best places to live! The lake is supervised by the Corp of Engineers and has two designated swimming beaches, three boat launches and four campgrounds featuring 525 camping sites.
