More Information about Polk City, Iowa

Polk City, Iowa combines the best of small town living, outdoor activities, and big city convenience and it’s tucked into the middle of Iowa’s lake country. This town of just shy of 5,000 residents has some very, very intriguing historical facts that the other small cities surrounding Des Moines, Iowa cannot claim. With that having been said let’s see what those facts are about Polk City, Iowa.

Interesting History

The town was first settled in 1846. At that time the first square mile was donated to the city to be on the premise that it would be a park. The town square still marks that spot today. The town was incorporated in 1850 and at that time was larger than Des Moines. It claimed a flour mill, five shoe shops, three general merchandise stores and five saloons. Somehow Des Moines still wrestled away the opportunity to become the county seat in 1857 and then the state capital shortly afterward. Polk City came within an eyelash of becoming the state capital. The town saw steady and continued growth and that was enhanced by the addition of a railroad line added in 1874 between Des Moines and Ames.

Recreation of Today

The real turning point came for Polk City in the 1960s. The Army Corp of Engineers had plans to build the Saylorville Reservoir. One plan suggested relocating Polk City residents and flooding the city! Fortunately the second plan was chosen which included a second dam, preserving Polk City, and now offering residents and visitors two bodies of water, Saylorville Lake and Big Creek Lake. This decision has resulted in a large amount of development around these bodies of water.

Amenities at an arm’s length

Let’s go back to how we opened. Here is this quaint small town nestled next to two very nice bodies of water. There are no outdoor recreational activities lacking! Any water sports are available. Saylorville Lake offers over 26,000 acres of water for fishing, canoeing, sailing, waterskiing or just cruising. There are four campgrounds with a total capacity of 525 camping sites. There are two designated beach areas, six recreational areas for day use, and hard surfaced trails for extensive biking and hiking. Wait! This is in Iowa? Then that list can be repeated with the over 800 acre lake of Big Creek. Want some big city convenience? This sleepy little city is only 25 minutes away from the capital of Iowa. Des Moines has over 600,000 residents and all the amenities of a large city. You are right next to the intersection of two major interstate highways, going north-south and east-west. You are 30 minutes from a very nice regional airport offering air traffic service anywhere. The metro area offers over 800 dining venues for your experimenting palate and retail opportunities abound. There are many, many family activities offered; amusement park, museums, zoos and more. Wow! What a gold mine! There is so much to embrace about Polk City, Iowa that it makes you want to up and move there tomorrow!
