History
Waukee was first laid out as a town in 1869 and some think it was named after Milwaukee. The town was incorporated in 1878. Back then it was home to the largest coal mine in the state with the deepest mine shaft. A mining camp of over 500 immigrants from Sweden, Italy and Croatia produced the most coal in the state. This beginning continued to today in which neighbors have helped neighbors creating a warm and comfortable environment.

Growth
The latest census of 2016 had the population just shy of 20,000 people. To give you an idea of the growth Waukee is experiencing the district is the fastest growing school district in the state of Iowa with more than 1,000 staff and almost 8,000 students.
