Fluoride Treatment and Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity can make it impossible to enjoy our favorite foods and drinks. Hot and cold food and beverages can be uncomfortable when a patient has tooth sensitivity. No one wants to avoid coffee or ice cream but sensitivity can lead to just that!

In this section, we will review some of the causes of tooth sensitivity and list some oral care products that you may be advised to use to help reduce sensitivity.

What leads to tooth sensitivity?

Some factors that may lead to tooth sensitivity include:

  • Genetics! Some people take excellent care of their teeth but still have issues that are simply the result of genetics.
  • Patients who keep a diet rich in acidic foods and beverages can lead to the wearing away of tooth enamel.
  • Being too aggressive when brushing your teeth and gums can result in gum recession and damage the enamel.
  • Poor oral hygiene will also quickly lead to tooth sensitivity and decay.

Temporary sensitivity every once in a while can be normal but if you have severe sensitivity, you may need to be treated by your dental professional. If your tooth sensitivity is at a level that causes you to avoid your favorite foods and beverages, it may be time to contact your dentist.

Your dental professional team will be able to determine if your sensitivity can be treated or if it is something that requires a specialist. Simply adding fluoride products to your daily oral hygiene routine can greatly improve your comfort. They may also recommend professional fluoride treatments every week or so until the sensitivity subsides.

How does fluoride help tooth sensitivity?

Fluoride is a mineral that is commonly added to public drinking water and oral health care products and is used to help strengthen tooth enamel and prevent decay and sensitivity. Along with regular use, some patients can benefit from fluoride treatments after their professional dental cleanings.

Can I prevent tooth sensitivity?

Preventing tooth sensitivity can be relatively simple. While fluoride treatments received at the dental office during regular cleanings and checkups is beneficial, below are a few more things that you can do to help prevent tooth sensitivity.

  • Make sure that you are using a soft bristled toothbrush and brush your teeth gently twice daily.
  • During home care, incorporate an anti-sensitivity or fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash.
  • Make sure you visit your dentist at least twice a year, more often if recommended.
  • Try to avoid foods that are known to cause damage to tooth enamel such as acidic foods and beverages like sodas and citrus juices.

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity, it is important to address this with your dentist. Preventative care is the easiest way to keep your mouth healthy and seeing your dentist regularly will allow you to do just that! Sensitivity can be remedied easily when addressed immediately.
